Water and Sanitation Prize for Latin America and the Caribbean

The first edition of the Water and Sanitation Prize for Latin America and the Caribbean,, sponsored by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and FEMSA, was held November 16, 2009 in Mexico City, during the First International Water Association (IWA) Development Congress, at the Sheraton Centro Histórico.




 The Water and Sanitation Prize has the objective to recognize water and wastewater authorities and operators in Latin America and the Caribbean in order to stimulate the exchange of ideas and experiences and to generate sustainable solutions the problems in the region. The three categories of the Water and Sanitation Prize that recognize best practices and innovation are: 
• Water Management 
• Sanitation Management 
• Solid Waste Management
 

A panel of experts in the Water and Sanitation Division of the IDB selected two finalists and one winner in each category. (Finalists)
 

The recognition of the winners consisted of a silver sculpture, titled “Drop of Silver”, made by the recognized Latin American artist, Gerardo Azcúnaga. The sculptures were given by Jose Antonio Fernandez, President of the Administrative Board and General Executive Director of FEMSA, and Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the IDB.

The winners turned out to be the most innovating and effective in the implementation of projects in the management of water, sanitation and solid waste:

División de Saneamiento de la Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo (IMM), Uruguay 

Solid Waste Management:

Premio del Agua
Prefeitura Municipal de Londrina, Brasil 



Sponsored by FEMSA Foundation, the winners and finalists will receive scholarships that will enable specialized courses at the Water Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (CAALCA). 

CAALCA, located at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, was created in 2008 with funds of the Tecnoloógico de Monterrey, FEMSA and the IDB with the aim to create a private center of applied investigation and human resources for the region in the areas of sustainable use of water.
