FEMSA's history has been focused on two main goals: to generate economic and social value. Since our birth in 1890, we have remained at the forefront of the beverage industry through continuous innovation, efficient performance, solid growth, besides being a pioneer in Mexico in establishing policies focused on the employees, community development, and environmental care.
1890
FEMSA's history began in 1890 with the founding of the brewery Cervecería Cuauhtémoc in Monterrey, México.
1906
For the first time, FEMSA provides housing for its employees.
1910
For the first time, employees receive vouchers for medical services
1911
Cervecería Cuauhtémoc founds the Cuauhtémoc Polytechnical School to offer elementary,
junior-high, and technical education to its employees.
1918
The Savings and Investments Cooperative, today Sociedad Cuauhtémoc y Famosa (SCyF), is
founded to promote educational and economic development for employees and their families.
1925
SCyF offers medical services to employees at its own clinics and through house calls.
1937
Cervecería Cuauhtémoc supports the opening of the Mexican Red Cross in Monterrey.
1943
A group of businessmen headed by Eugenio Garza Sada, the director of Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, establish the Tecnológico de Monterrey, opening its doors to 350 students and 14 professors. Currently there are 33 campuses throughout Mexico, and more than 90,000 students.
1944
SCYF opens its first recreational and social center in Monterrey.
1945
The first medical clinic for employees of Cervecería Cuauhtémoc and their families opens its doors. This clinic preceded the Mexican Institute of Social Security [Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS)].
1957
The Cuauhtémoc housing development, with 1,318 houses for company employees, opens in Monterrey. This act was also carried out before the creation of the National Housing Fund for Workers [Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores (Infonavit)].
The Centro Escolar Cuauhtémoc is established to provide education to the children of company employees in Monterrey.
1977
The Museo de Monterrey is founded, and the FEMSA Art Collection acquires its first works.
1986
OXXO establishes its Ecology Award.
Hundreds of schools participate to help promote the balance of nature through the planting of trees, cleaning up of public areas, and recycling.
1992
The FEMSA Monterrey Biennal Art Competition starts with the purpose of acknowledging, strengthening, and stimulating artistic creation in Mexico. Its consolidation throughout the years has given it nation-wide recognition.
1993
FEMSA creates the Eugenio Garza Sada Award.
The Eugenio Garza Sada Award is given annually and recognizes the activities by individuals and institutions that promote the well being of the community through the development, improvement, and promotion of productive training for the use of the human and natural resources.
The Designated Driver Program is launched
Its objective is to reduce traffic accidents related to the excess consumption of alcohol.
2001
The Program for Workplace Integration of People with Different Abilities is formally established.
2002
OXXO launches its Rounding-Up Program.
2004
Three of FEMSA's breweries receive the Environmental Excellence Award, granted by Mexican Federal Government.
FEMSA is awarded as "Leader in Business and Social Responsibility" by the Hay Group, management and human resources consultant and the Latin American magazine Gestión
2005
FEMSA is recognized as a Socially Responsible Company by Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (CEMEFI)
"Excellence and Enterpreneur Ethics" awarded by the Mexican Chamber of Industry.
2006
For the second time in a row, FEMSA is recognized as a Socially Responsible Company (ESR) by Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía (CEMEFI).
2008
FEMSA Foundation is created as an instrument of social investment that supports education, science, and technology for the conservation and sustainable use of water as well as the improvement in the quality of life within communities.
